QUOTE

Your time is limited, so don't waste it living someone else's life. Don't be trapped by dogma - which is living with the results of other people's thinking. Don't let the noise of others' opinions drown out your own inner voice. And most important, have the courage to follow your heart and intuition.

LOVE READING?

Throughout my life, I've always enjoyed reading.
I realize I have been neither the fastest nor the most consistent reader but I've always tried to do my best.
Since 2012 began, I have focused more on my reading and I've obviously been able to read more books, so I decided to join Goodreads (don't know why I haven't done it before)
I think Goodreads is an excellent way to get to know more authors and books, while having the chance to read other people's reviews, or to join a discussion.
If you enjoy reading, and your real life friends/acquaintances  are not really into reading, go try Goodreads.
Hopefully I'll see you there. You can find me as Karen A.

TIRED OF REALLY BAD LESBIAN MOVIES

I'm sure I've mentioned this many times before. I've always cared about gay movies, I try to help all the independent film makers by renting or buying movies, simply because I deeply believe as a community we need and deserve visibility.
I always think of a young girl or a young boy knowing deep inside that they're gay and not being able to talk about it, wondering if they're wrong, if they're sick. So by having a way to find yourself portrayed, or represented on screen can make you feel less lonely, you understand that you're not alone, that you're not the only one.
So, this leads to this: I just watched a movie called "The Guest House" which is, how can I put it? really awful.
In my opinion the acting is quite bad, the movie is way too predictable, and the soundtrack is....so.....wrong on the love scenes, the music made me feel as if I were watching some sort of soft porn movie.
It's been a while since I felt like wanting my money back, but unfortunately this time it happened. I'm so relieved that I just rented the movie and not bought it.
So, if you happen to be on the business, and you're reading this, could you please keep this in mind? VISIBILITY yes - BAD MOVIES no. I mean if you already have a budget, why not make it a believable movie? And please forget about us lesbians saying I love you after a day together, that's just stupid and not real.
I'd deeply appreciate it.

Lip Service Series 2

It's been almost 2 years since I wrote a post about Lip Service. Having watched the last episode of Lip Service series 2, I can only say I hope there is a third series.I mean, how can you develop full story lines in only 6 episodes?

Back in series 1 we all fell in love with Sam aka Hot Cop, decided to pick teams between Cat/Sam or Cat/Frankie. Now in series 2 we have a very different Sam (obviously driven by rage, loss, and pain) yet we try to pick teams again between Lexy/Sam or Lexy/Tess. We get to see 2 main characters leave the show (I think Frankie could go back for a third series) And Tess, well she's always sweet, unfortunate in love Tess.

Don't get me wrong, by my saying this, I'm not implying I didn't like it, but series 2 was so dark, so different from the first one that I definitely felt I needed more episodes. Even if a third series were the last one, I think the characters and the viewers could get some sort of closure.

I really hope BBC Three, decides to have a third series.

A FEW CANINE THOUGHTS

I sit down to have a cup of coffee, after a long walk with my dogs, and I can't stop thinking how grateful I am. I've learned so many things thanks to their wisdom and their love.
Unfortunately, as a society, we're so far behind when it comes to animal rights. Things could be so different it parents taught their kids, to respect animals.
Let's be honest, how many people buy, give dogs as gifts, or even adopt without taking into account  that they are NOT objects, that they need rules, that they need to be taken care of?

In my humble opinion before you get a dog you should ask yourself some of these questions:  (I'll use she/he simply because I won't use it, but that's just me)

- Am I willing to commit to this dog? Am I aware that she/he could live up to 15 years?
- Will she/he be alone at home for too many hours?
- Is there enough space at home for her/him?
- Am I aware of the money I will have to spend? (Including food, collar, leash, toys, regular visits to the vet and so on)
- Will I play with her/him, take her/him out for a walk even if I am tired, or don't feel like it?

If you have answered yes to these questions, I'll take the liberty to suggest adoption. Why? Very simple, shelters are overcrowded, furry friends in need of a second chance. Dogs that might have been abandoned simply because their humans didn't have the time, space or patience to deal with them.

Fortunately, most of these dogs are either spayed or neutered, which is a very interesting topic, and I promise to write about it on a next post.

What I'm trying to explain on this post, is that dogs deserve better. We must be aware of their suffering when they are not properly taken care of.
Please, let's be better human beings. We have to stand for our rights, but let's not forget about theirs.

Some thoughts on Animal Shelters

I can't deny I'm not exactly the most trusting person in the world, I wouldn't know if I was born this way, or if as time passed by it became a learned behaviour.
So, if you have been kind enough to read my blog, you'll possibly know by now that one of the things I care the most is animals, their well being, their being protected against cruelty.
So this leads right to what I want to write about today.
-Shelters-
I'm very saddened to tell you that in Mexico due to a lack of laws (or real ones at least) there are way too many dogs in the streets. It's a heartbreaking situation.
So many people buy or adopt pets as if they were objects and when they realize they have to take care of them, train them they just let them go.
Fortunately for those furry friends, there are honest people who dedicate most of their time rescuing them and finding the right homes for them.
Unfortunately it hasn't been enough. In my opinion there aren't enough shelters, and the ones existing are struggling due to financial issues, most of them have a dog and cat overpopulation.
A couple of years ago, when I was looking for shelters or organizations to which I could donate money, my being not so trusting got in the way. I mean, I wanted to help animals but how could I know that those were real shelters, or that they actually helped animals?
After an exhaustive search, I came across a few and eventually picked up one.
I know that there will be so many honest shelters and people I will never know of, and I wish I could help them all, but it's impossible.
There will always be animals in need, no matter what country you live in, so please, if you can, maybe once in a while you can donate a bag of food (you don't have to feed the 300 hundred dogs they have) or old newspapers, or a toy. Trust me, your help will be deeply appreciated. Let's show all the neglected animals, not all humans are bad.
"The greatness of a nation and its moral progress can be judged by the way its animals are treated" Mahatma Gandhi

To my dogs

We may not speak
the very same language
We may not eat
the very same food
But you and I
my dearly beloved
share a bond
that'll never be broken

#TwitterBlackout

Today Saturday January 28 2012, I am joining the campaign #TwitterBlackout.
I understand it is not Twitter per se who wants to censor certain tweets (it's worldwide governments who agree with censorship) but I believe in users raising our voices against something we do not agree with.
I won't lie to you, it will be a difficult day, being so used to tweeting or reading all the amazing links I find on Twitter on a daily basis, but I know it's for a good cause.
